In 2008, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) revised revised a number of their safety standards in such areas as electrical safety, hazardous locations, NFPA 70E and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Could your employees be at risk? Could your organization be out of compliance? What changed and what affects your business?
Need more details on exactly what OSHA requires? The Workplace Safety Awareness Council has been awarded a Federal grant to develop and deliver free OSHA training covering these new changes and the half-day classes begin in May. Each attendee will receive a CD-ROM filled with training documents, video and PowerPoint that you can take back and train your employees.

The Niagara Frontier Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers conducted a joint Lunch Meeting between the Construction Section and the General Membership of the Chapter on November 14, 2008. This was one of the best-attended meetings this year and we would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Danforth Mechanical for the use of their fine new facility at 200 Colvin Woods in Tonawanda to host the event.
To open the meeting, the Chapter presented a check for $1000 to Mercy Flight of Western New York. This organization, providing vital life saving air ambulance service to the 7 counties of Western New York; was one of the favorite charities of one of our recently departed Members, Mary Ellen Salen. This money represents collections from the Construction 50/50 split and a donation from the General Membership in her honor. Mr. Jeff Mendola, Director of Development and External affairs graciously accepted it; he provided the members with a detailed description of the services provided to Western New York by Mercy Flight and the need for donations.
Mary Ellen was an original Stakeholder in the Construction Section and a passionate advocate of safety in the Construction industry. Her service to the Chapter and Section provided inspiration to many new safety professionals and served to increase awareness and interest in the field of Construction safety. We fondly remember her for her wit and wisdom that she selflessly shared with us all.
Afterwards, Mr. John Coniglio of OSEA conducted a superb presentation on New York State Labor Law and Liability. John’s expert knowledge and presentation provided an eye opening overview of the legal environment faced by contractors and owners doing business in New York. The discussion afterwards provided a learning opportunity for all.
Some photos of the event are included.
